How's this for a summertime Fun Foto Friday? This is Robert Pernell. He's a sand artist. Or     was    . This photo was printed in the Rochester Herald on August 6, 1922. Robert used to entertain the crowds at Charlotte Beach with his larger-than-life creations...

This is a close up of Robert Pernell, an African-American sand artist. He has been entertaining crowds at Charlotte Beach with his huge sand sculptures. Printed in Rochester Herald, August 6, 1922.

As a kid I used to spend a lot of time on the boardwalk in Atlantic City watching the sand artists work their magic for tips. This photo of Robert Pernell and his pet lion brought me right back to that time in my life when anything was possible - as long as I had a pale & shovel, and endless summer hours to kill.

is going on right now (thru June 30) in Atlantic City. Won't someone PLEASE bring this lost art back to Charlotte Beach?!
