This article was scraped from Rochester Subway. This is a blog about Rochester history and urbanism has not been published since 2017. The current owners are now publishing link spam which made me want to preserve this history.. The original article was published April 16, 2016 and can be found here.
From local development to just plain news of the weird, here are your RocLinks for this past week...
*Cough* *Cough*
Be careful out there. As you may have heard, UofR is experiencing
a rather large norovirus outbreak at the moment. Wash your hands and get well soon, everyone.
Gamble!
It appears the city of Rochester is so hard up for a performing arts center downtown that they are willing to mortgage
the entirety of downtown on a casino. It's a gamble. It could work - I was just at the Horseshoe in Cleveland, and the setup is rather good, but it could also be lousy - Sugarhouse isn't doing its immediate neighborhood any favors in Philadelphia, nor is Harrah's in Chester.
More Filling In
Mayor Warren brought up
filling in the Northern Inner Loop in her State of the City address the other day. I'd like to talk more about this in a full length article, but let me spoil it here by saying this is the right thing to do. The Inner Loop should be removed completely, and the street grid around town replaced. This should extend to the duplicative and unnecessary on ramps to 490 between the south wedge and downtown. In addition all this needs be accompanied with an upzoning, inclusionary zoning, and neighborhood improvement grants to the entire affected area. There is no reason that a robust and thriving downtown cannot extend all the way to the market, the post office, and the train station.
How Bizarre
Apparently Rochester is chock-a-block
with knockoff designer goods. Who knew?
I Like to Watch
And finally, if bird watching is your thing, then you're welcome.
Enjoy watching these nesting falcons on top of the Times Square Building downtown. * * *
