Baby Steps
If you spend any amount of time looking at real estate in Rochester, you might discover that there are a non-zero number of vacant properties (although not as many as you might think). Others have noticed too, and a report
on them has been written by Monroe County. While some of their solutions are laudable, it seems that access to capital for renovations isn't there. This is one of the biggest problems, whether it's for home owners themselves or investors.

From the Department of Iffy Ideas
As a UofR alum, I'd like to take a moment to go on record and say that arming campus safety
is a terrible idea. There's not even particular evidence that this is fixing any actual problem, and I am troubled by the reference to the recent kidnapping as some sort of reason to have guns. It's not like the two students were grabbed and taken in front of two campus safety officers who looked on helplessly unarmed. As a personal anecdote, I recently rode the new commuter rail line in Denver. It was uncomfortable. While riding a commuter train in NYC (LIRR for example), your ticket is checked/punched/taken by a friendly conductor type who happens to bravely carry around a sizable wad of cash. In Denver, you cannot buy a ticket on the train, and your ticket is checked by an armed transit police officer carrying no money. I thought we were the good, real Americans out here. Not the people of NYC. Something is wrong.
Pour Me a Drink
If a story about UofR arming their guards is driving you to drink, as it is me, maybe you should try the new gin
being released by Black Button. If you're at risk to get shot locally, you might as well drink locally too.
Now Opening
And finally, new stores
are opening all over, including a pet store at the long vacant Blockbuster location on the corner of Goodman and Monroe. Best of luck to everyone. * * *
