Celebrate Park(ing) Day 2014 at the "Inner Loop Country Club"

This article was scraped from Rochester Subway. This is a blog about Rochester history and urbanism has not been published since 2017. The current owners are now publishing link spam which made me want to preserve this history.. The original article was published September 10, 2014 and can be found here.

Get ready to putt your way through Park(ing) Day 2014, at Rochester's prestigious Inner Loop Country Club.

Have you ever wanted to DO something with all of that (generally) unused street parking in Rochester? Have you ever wanted to show people that we could have livelier streets with a few less cars and a few more amenities? If you answered yes to either of these questions, it's time to learn about Park(ing) Day. The event's website is at     www.parkingday.org

but in case you want the elevator pitch instead, Park(ing) Day is an event that has been going on for over a decade around the world to bring attention to the positive impact on livability that on-street parking can have when reimagined as something other than car storage. And this is where our story starts...

A mini-golf tournament will be held in downtown Rochester for Park(ing) Day on September 19 across 9 holes built in 9 different parking spaces.

we thought it would be just perfect to try and make a difference this year. It was time to do something with all the parking downtown. That something has coalesced into founding the Inner Loop Country Club. We're prestigious, assuredly, but also the kind of country club where you can throw back a few beers while wearing a silly hat.

In honor of the club's founding, we have chosen to host the Inaugural Smugtown Open. This mini-golf tournament will be held downtown for Park(ing) Day 2014 across 9 holes built in 9 different parking spaces. The Open will be held on Park(ing) Day (9/19/2014) from 9am to 5pm inside the Inner Loop.

And this is where you, Rochestersubway readers, come in.

First, we would LOVE to blow the doors off. We will have nearly 500 scorecards, and we would love to give out everyone. We also have some prizes for the best mini-golfers who make it to all 9 holes. Tell your friends, your spouses, your kids, maybe even the creepy guy sitting in his car next to you in traffic on 490. We don't really care who else comes, but we want to see YOU there.

Second, we need some volunteers. The more the merrier, as mini-golf courses don't run themselves. If you are interested, willing, and able to help out, please do contact us at      [email protected]

. Volunteers will also receive a top-secret, special thank you for helping out.
